Our Territory, Our Responsibility

Stellat’en has stewarded —our lands and waters—since time immemorial. Our territory encompasses the Stellako River, Fraser Lake, Francois Lake, and the surrounding forests, wetlands, and ecosystems that sustain our people, culture, and way of life.

Our relationship to this land is not transactional. It is rooted in responsibility—responsibility to protect the water, to sustain the fish and wildlife, and to ensure that future generations can continue to practice our culture on the land.

Today, Stellat’en continues to exercise this responsibility through our governance, stewardship, and decision-making across our traditional territory.

Our Territory

Ne Keyoh is a place of deep ecological and cultural significance. The Stellako River is one of the most important sockeye salmon systems in the region. Our forests, lakes, and wetlands support a wide range of species and provide the foundation for our harvesting practices, cultural teachings, and community well-being.

These lands and waters are not separate from who we are—they are part of our identity as Dakelh people.

Our approach to partnership is grounded in respect, accountability, and shared responsibility for the land. We work collaboratively where possible, while maintaining our role as stewards of our territory.

Our Vision for Toonasa Ne Keyah

Stellat’en is committed to a future where our lands and waters remain healthy, our culture remains strong, and our people continue to thrive.

Our vision includes:

  • Protecting key ecological and cultural areas
  • Supporting Indigenous-led conservation and stewardship

  • Maintaining strong connections between our people and the land

We will continue to exercise our stewardship authority to ensure that Toonasa Ne Keyah is protected for generations to come.

Traditional Use Study

The Traditional Use Study will look at how we used the lands and waters near the proposed transmission line. We hope to identify medicinal plants, berry patches and other cultural significant areas. If these are identified we will look at ways of avoiding impacting these plants, berry patches and other areas. BC Hydro wants to get moving on this project. They will have people on the ground investigating potential routes for the proposed ROW this summer.
